At the start of 2020, when the development plans for the year were being laid out. Beam’s Tech lead, Alex Romanov, during a video presentation, said “2020 is gonna be epic” and he was right in every sense of the word. The past 12 months have been a mix of emotions, but we at Beam Africa are super thankful that we ended it on a positive note, with lots of activities on the community front.
In this edition of our monthly newsletter, we’ll look at some defining moments for Beam Africa during the course of the year, so join as we take a journey through 2020, which sorta feels like a long time ago.
Uptrennd Writing Contest
During the course of the year, we organized several competitions, with the sole purpose of growing and expanding the Beam Africa community beyond Telegram and the existing social media platforms. Uptrennd provided us with a new opportunity to spread our tentacles as we attracted more community members.
The Uptrennd writing competition had a significant impact on the growth of the community and altered the direction of the Beam Africa community for the better. We had a new set of community members, who regularly engage with the project, who became long-term Beam and privacy advocates.
During the Uptrennd writing competition, we had a ton of entries submitted by members of the Uptrennd community, from which we had up to 30 winners all sharing from a Beam reward pool. This activity ranks highly as one of the most impactful activities, the Beam Africa community organized in 2020.
Ambassador Recruitment
The Beam Africa team is made up of a group of young crypto enthusiasts, we call ambassadors who help in promoting Beam across various mediums, in different communities across Africa. These talented individuals possess marketable skills like programming, content creation, product design, business development and multilingual abilities. Together, these talented individuals work together in engaging and growing an active Beam Africa community across our various platforms.
And the only reason we were able to attract such individuals and retain them is that we’re steady on the lookout for bright talent. Also, we have a reward system that incentivizes their activities, in a fun, competitive and exciting way. Lastly, we’re a family of young people who love crypto and want to see each other grow.
Does that sound like a family you’ll like to join? why wait, be part of our African geng by applying to become our newest ambassador.
Beam Tiktok Challenge
Sometime in July, Beam Africa joined the bandwagon of crypto projects who utilized the popular video-sharing social networking service, TikTok in promoting their projects. It was a fun challenge as we got a number of entries and ultimately, we there were winners.
The #BeamTikTokChallenge got over 20k views on the TikTok platform, it was nice to see several creative videos about the best privacy coin in the crypto space.
Beam Africa For Change Challenge
Beam has been immensely active in Africa for over a year now, and during that time, Beam has been involved in promoting cryptocurrency and privacy. Beam also supported Africans by sponsoring members of the Beam Africa community with SiBAN annual membership. All this shows the keen interest Beam has towards supporting the growth and sustenance of a thriving privacy-centric community.
During a recent video AMA featuring Beam’s CTO, Alex Romanov and a prominent player in the African crypto space, Roselyn Wanjiru, we learnt a great deal of the challenges faced by millions of Africans across the continent. We think this can be an opportunity for the entrepreneurial African, to solve these challenges, and create a product or startup in the process.
This led to the creation of the Beam Africa for Change challenge, where Africans were challenged to dream of the next innovative idea. The Beam Team is committed to seeing this idea come to fruition, and they’re willing to support by providing technical support as well as a possible introduction to investors. And importantly, there is the grand prize of $1,000, while the running up gets consolation prizes.
Beam Africa AMA Series
Due to the pandemic, 2020 was the year of virtual events, and the Beam Africa team was no different. We had several AMA sessions, as well as virtual hangouts and African inspired Beam Talks where we had key players in the Africa crypto space like Yele Bademosi speak with Beam’s tech Lead, Alex Romanov.
Beam Africa organized and co-hosted over 40 events during the 2020 calendar year! Now, that is epic.
Final Thoughts
As we look towards having an eventful and exciting 2021 filled with optimism and enthusiasm, we will like to look back to 2020 and thank everyone that was a part of the making of an epic year.
